Instant Litter
Art Chantry · 2002 · Screen-printed exhibition poster
The exhibition poster for Chantry's solo retrospective at the City Museum in St. Louis, 701 North 15th Street, on view January 12 through April 28, 2002. The title borrows from Instant Litter, the 1985 book in which he cataloged the throwaway street flyers and gig posters that carried Pacific Northwest punk. It is entirely hand-built: a crude, heavy outline of a face laid over a green rectangle and a field of yellow, with color blocks that never quite register and letterforms that read as stamped or stenciled, complete with misalignment and bleed. The distressed line quality mimics cheap industrial printing and generations of photocopying, the exact vocabulary of the ephemera the show was about. The City Museum's speech-balloon logo and street address sit in the lower right, and the two-line title runs across the base in yellow and blue.
