Águas e Águas
Kevin Cantrell · 2010s · Gold Foil Stamped Poster on Gruppo Cordenons Paper
"Águas e Águas" is part of a poster series Cantrell designed with creative consultant Arlo Vance for Italian specialty paper maker Gruppo Cordenons, one entry in a seven-piece set built around the opening chapter of Genesis. The Portuguese text ("No dia segundo, disse Deus: Haja uma separação entre águas e águas") describes God's separation of the waters, hand-lettered by Cantrell in the ornate blackletter and copperplate traditions of historical map cartouches and engraved certificates. This edition is stamped in gold foil, printed by Gotschall Engraving on Gruppo Cordenons stock, letting every hairline stroke catch the light as a showcase of both the paper and the craft.
Lettering is drawing letters, not writing them, every curve is a decision.Kevin Cantrell
