This poster is Lance Rutter's contribution to "Hommage à Mucha," a 2009 group exhibition at Budapest's Lengyel Intézet, the city's Polish cultural institute. Rutter renders a bearded man's profile in gold and periwinkle, with a Mucha-esque woman drawn flowing across his back and shoulder, borrowing directly from the decorative vocabulary Alphonse Mucha built for Sarah Bernhardt's Paris stage posters more than a century earlier. It's a poster designer's tribute to the poster designer who helped invent the form, rendered in the swirling line and jewel-toned palette that made "le style Mucha" instantly recognizable.
