Les Liaisons Dangereuses
Lance Rutter · 2009 · Illustrated poster
Lance Rutter's poster for Canberra Repertory Society's 2009 production of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" skips the usual candlelit boudoir imagery for something sharper: a haughty pink-and-red Persian cat, ruffed like an aristocrat, with a small bird perched fearlessly on its collar. It's a witty stand-in for Christopher Hampton's stage adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos's 1782 novel, all preening cruelty and courtly plumage, staged by one of Australia's oldest continuously running theatre companies. Rutter trades period costume for a single, perfectly groomed predator, and the joke lands instantly.
