Neumeier (Cat)
Marty Neumeier · 1985 · Silkscreen on museum-weight paper
A self-promotional art poster published by Gazelle Editions to announce the studio's leap from Santa Barbara to Silicon Valley. The cat is never drawn, only implied: a curled tail, four paws, and a masked face with two pale blue eyes, each shape airbrushed through a stencil so the edges dissolve into spatter. Your eye supplies the rest of the animal, which is the whole trick, and the stencil-cut NEUMEIER below repeats the same logic in letterforms. Silkscreened on heavy museum-weight stock to give a business card the presence of a print, it was already hanging in future clients' offices by the time he arrived in the valley.
I gave it a fine-art feeling with silkscreen printing and heavy, museum-quality paper. By the time I got there the poster was already hanging in my future clients' offices.Marty Neumeier
