In Remembrance
Justin Ahrens · 2001 · Offset lithograph
The original remembrance piece. In December 2000, Justin Ahrens photographed the Twin Towers and lower Manhattan from Liberty Island, a quiet black-and-white frame of a skyline that would change nine months later. After September 11, 2001, he designed this poster at Rule29 around that photograph and a small memorial symbol that holds the date within its structure: nine stars represent September, eleven divisions mark the day, and two white bars stand for the towers. Working with O'Neil Printing and Domtar paper, Rule29 produced offset lithograph posters, cards, presentation pieces, and lapel pins bearing the symbol, and the pins were sent to every member of the United States House and Senate and to members of the presidential Cabinet. A decade later, the same identity became the foundation for the 2011 tenth-anniversary edition.
