Commander Cooper's Intergalactic Golf Tour
Justin Ahrens · 2000 · Photography and print campaign
Another out of this world shoot with Alice Cooper: the tournament year built around Commander Cooper and an intergalactic golf tour, with Alice suited up as an astronaut in white coveralls, oversized moon boots, a toy ray gun, and a helmet stamped with the mission seal. The location did the rest of the work. Shot with photographer James Leland at Papago Park in Phoenix, the red sandstone buttes and rust-colored gravel read as Martian terrain with almost nothing done to them, and the greens of the neighboring course became the alien fairway. Leland pushed the film into hard color casts, magenta, acid green, cyan, and deep amber, so each frame feels like a transmission from a different planet, and the contact strips were kept as artwork of their own. The photography carried the whole campaign, from the printed package and CD jackets to the tournament collateral, all of it for Alice Cooper's Solid Rock Foundation and its free after-school music, art, dance, and vocational programs for teens.
