This Is My Normal, Documentary Poster Series
Justin Ahrens · 2011 · Offset print
A series of posters created to promote 'This Is My Normal,' a documentary film produced by Life In Abundance International in association with Rule29 and Wonderkind Studios. Filmed in the Mathare Valley, a section of the Mathare slums in Nairobi, Kenya, often referred to as the 'Forgotten Valley', the film explores two fundamental questions: 'What is poverty?' and 'What is normal?' The series includes an illustrated poster rendering the Mathare skyline as delicate white line art against a dusky blue field, with a mother and child silhouetted in warm peach tones, alongside three photographic posters featuring portraits of children from the community, a girl peering through a doorway, a boy with a radiant smile, and a girl framed between bright red fabric. Each poster carries the hand-lettered title, created as a custom typeface for the project, and the Mathare cityscape illustration threading through the lower third. All photography by Brian MacDonald, Wonderkind Studios. The documentary was filmed to catalyze a conversation about the complexities of poverty and bring awareness to some of the world's forgotten places and people. Art directed by Justin Ahrens with illustration by Von Glitschka and design by Tim Damitz. Printed by O'Neil Printing.
