Arizona Alice and the Adventure of the Lost 18
Justin Ahrens · 2001 · Letterpress
Directly inspired by Hatch Show Print's iconic 'Triple Johnny', the legendary triple-exposure portrait of Johnny Cash, this poster reimagines the composition for rock legend Alice Cooper's 5th Annual IATC Celebrity AM golf tournament, Episode V: 1997–2001, benefiting Alice Cooper's Solid Rock Foundation. Three overlapping figures in western dusters and cowboy hats stand with golf clubs, tinted in sepia and burnt orange, evoking the same ghostly, triple-silhouette effect that made the Cash poster a masterpiece of American vernacular design. The bold wood-type lettering, 'Arizona Alice and the Adventure of the Lost 18', is pure Hatch: stacked, oversized, unapologetically physical. The source portraits were shot by photographer James Leland on sepia Polaroid film, Alice in a duster and hat on a frontier-town street with a golf club over his shoulder, which is where the print's warm, weathered tonality comes from. Printed at Hatch Show Print in Nashville using the same letterpress methods the shop has employed since 1879. April 7–9, 2001.
The same wood, the same press, each print is a direct physical descendant of over a century of American craft.Hatch Show Print
