What You See
Justin Ahrens · 2013 · Digital print
A typographic meditation on perception, set against a saturated crimson field. Stacked slab serifs, distressed, weathered, almost letterpress in feel, anchor the composition: 'YOU LOOK AT' and 'YOU SEE,' bracketed by a hand-drawn ribbon reading 'THAT MATTERS' and the small connective phrase 'it's what.' The Henry David Thoreau quote becomes a designed object: a reminder that observation is an act of intention. Hierarchy carries the meaning, scale, texture, and ribbon flourish do the work that decoration usually claims.
It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.Henry David Thoreau
