SUNday SUN No. 301
Tad Carpenter · 2021 · Print · SUNday SUNS series · black, white, and metallic gold · dimensions unconfirmed
Sun No. 301 came the week after Tad Carpenter marked 300 straight Sundays, which he celebrated with a two-foot-square painting on plywood. Here the sun turns formal and graphic: a single oval face is divided down the center, one half white, the other metallic gold, with every feature mirrored in the opposite tone—a black eye in a gold socket, a gold eye in white, one dark cheek and one light. A continuous line forms brow and nose, and the lips lock together like puzzle pieces. A ring of short white rays dipped in gold makes the whole face read as a clock or medallion against the black field.
The image was posted to sunday-suns.com in February 2021; the printed footer reads SUNday SUN No. 301 beside Tad's signature.
Sunday Suns, the Counter-Print book, collects suns from the project's first six years; it was published in August 2021, six months after this sun. The book includes hundreds of suns, but no source I checked confirms whether No. 301 is among them.
This project is an experiment. This project is play. This project is half therapy and half visual journalism.Tad Carpenter
